About NC StateNorth Central State College is a public two-year community-based educational institution serving the residents of north central Ohio. The College offers high quality, technical education in more than 60 associate degree and certificate programs in Health, Business, Public Service, and Engineering Technologies, as well as customized workforce training programs.
The StudentsNorth Central State College has a friendly, small town atmosphere with most of the students coming from the local area. The College enrolls 3100 students per semester and is the largest public college within a 75 mile radius. The student population is evenly divided between traditional students starting straight out of high school and non-traditional older students who are returning to college to train for a second career. Two-thirds of the student body are part-time students. Minority students range between 10% to 15% depending on the year. Popular DegreesGraduates in the college’s health and public services associate degree programs continue to lead the state in percentage of graduates passing their board exams for licensure the first time it is attempted – scoring well above the national averages in every category. While health programs are the most popular, NC State's original roots are in manufacturing and business. The Kehoe Center in Shelby continues to train students in traditional tool and die disciplines with a growing interest in cross-training for many manufacturing systems including Pneumatics, Hydraulics and Electronic Controls. NC State graduates enjoy a 95% employment rate and a growing number of transfer and reverse transfer students are matriculating to and from Ohio’s public colleges and universities due to the ease of credit transfer. Early College OpportunitiesA growing segment of the open enrollment is high school students participating in a variety of programs including Tech Prep, Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO), Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit, and CollegeNOW and the Seniors to Sophomores initiative. North Central is a lead partner in the development of a multi-county P-16 Council, charged with improving access to education and increasing prosperity of individuals by meeting the changing employment needs of regional business and manufacturing. CostTuition at NC State is $143 per credit hour which is one of the lowest tuition rates in Ohio. A full-time student taking 12 credit hours per semester would pay $1716.00 per semester in tuition and fees. Two semesters of classes would cost about $3432.00. Actual costs will vary depending on how many credit hours classes are worth. Books are not included in tuition and fees Main CampusMain Campus sits on 600 beautiful wooded acres with walking paths and streams, sharing a campus with a branch of The Ohio State University. This location is accessible to the growing community of Ontario and is fifteen minutes from historic downtown Mansfield. Main campus is roughly half way between Cleveland and Columbus on interstate 71 which makes it possible to get to either city in about an hour's drive. All buildings on main campus are within a ten minute walking distance making it easy to get to class. General studies classes are on main campus along with students taking health degrees and public service degrees. Kee Hall houses many of the student services offices, including Admissions and the Student Success Center. Kee Hall is a student's first point of contact when applying to the college and it is also the place to find help with registering for classes. The campus includes a Campus Child Development Center, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and recognized in the state of Ohio for its quality, and a Campus Recreation Center, home of the champion Mansfield Mavericks basketball team comprised of students from both North Central State College and OSU Mansfield. Kehoe CenterStudents in Business and Manufacturing related degrees take most of their classes at the Kehoe Center in Shelby, which is seven miles northwest of main campus. This 163,000 square foot state of the art facility houses a nationally recognized Integrated Systems Technology laboratory and the regional Advanced Manufacturing Tool & Die Center, as well as an EnterpriseOhio Network’s Skillsmax Center. Outreach CentersNorth Central State also offers classes at several outreach centers located throughout its service area. Students can take video conference classes at the Ashland/West Holmes Career Center, Bucyrus High School, Willard High School, and the Urban Center in downtown Mansfield. Professors take turns teaching classes from each location while broadcasting the same lecture to the other outreach centers. Additionally, face to face classes are also offered at the Urban Center. Campus ActivitiesOur students compete in club sports including men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and a host of intramural sports. Numerous clubs are also available for a host of social, religious and political interests. The College also hosts Rock-n-Ribs during the summer. Nationally known bands and rib vendors are invited to help the College Foundation raise funds for scholarships and campus projects. A Little More History Prior to its charter as North Central Technical College, the institution was known as the Mansfield School of Technology. It was initiated by the Mansfield Board of Education in September 1961 and approved by the State Department of Education. The rationale of the Mansfield Board of Education was to establish a two-year, post-high school diploma granting school that would prepare men and women for various careers. The graduates were satisfying the rapidly-growing employment needs in the industrial and business society of the area. The original location of the Mansfield School of Technology was 218 Marion Avenue, Mansfield, Ohio. The limited physical facilities, projected enrollment growth, and need for additional student services led the school’s administration, advisory committees, and the Mansfield Board of Education to seek the creation of a Technical College District in compliance with the Ohio Revised Code. North Central Technical College was approved by the Ohio Board of Regents and certified by the Secretary of State on September 26, 1968. This action of the Ohio Board of Regents and the Secretary of State created the Technical College District in the contiguous counties of Ashland, Crawford, and Richland. In August of 1999, the Board of Trustees changed the name of the College to North Central State College. Currently, the NC State-OSU Campus houses North Central State College and a regional campus of The Ohio State University. Certain physical facilities and services are shared by each institution. The campus represents a model in sharing resources by two separate institutions. Each institution has its own faculty, curriculum, policies, and operating procedures.
